The Setting and Facilities

In Acadia

The Schoodic Education Research Center (SERC) is located in Acadia National Park among the outstanding natural features and beauty of the Schoodic Peninsula. The Schoodic portion of Acadia National Park includes 2,400 acres of spruce-fir forest and four nearby islands. A six-mile scenic drive offers panoramic views along the rocky coast and access to hiking trails that lead to the highest point on the Schoodic Peninsula.

The SERC campus is 100 acres within the Park, on the wooded heights of Big Moose Island surrounded by ocean on three sides. On campus there is access to several hiking trails, two tennis courts, three play grounds, a regulation baseball field, and a picnic pavilion with covered seating for over 100 people – in addition to some of the best coastal views Downeast has to offer. Once home to the U.S. Navy, SERC's facilities include nearly 200,000 square feet of meeting, lodging, dining, office, and laboratory space.

Meeting and Classroom Space

The SERC campus is a place for people to work together. Our primary concerns are support for scientific research in and around the park, conservation, natural resources use, and the economic issues related to these activities. However, the research center's facilities are available to any group that needs a place to meet. The Schoodic Point location and the overnight lodging facilities make this an ideal place for board of directors retreats, extended planning meetings, training workshops, faculty retreats, small conferences, and other activities where it is important to provide an attractive, quiet setting away from the press of the daily routine.

The 6,500 square foot Schooner Club is an attractive log building with a warm wood paneled interior. The building has three separate rooms and either can be rented in its entirety or used by up to three separate users. The building also has a kitchen and dining area. The aesthetic appeal of this building, combined with dining capability, is ideal for meetings and seminars.

The 4,800 square foot Chapel is currently used for a resident science program for elementary-aged children. It has three smaller rooms that could be ideal for breakout sessions, classrooms, or smaller meetings in addition to educational programs.

In fall of 2006 the 10,000 square foot Moore Auditorium will be complete with a 125 seat auditorium, two 60 seat meeting/seminar rooms, and state-of-the-art IT and audio-visual facilities.

Lodging

Many groups find that the best use of the SERC campus involves at least one overnight stay. Our lodging facilities are available to groups making use of the conference and meeting facilities. We also provide lodging for students, artists, and researchers working with SERC program activities, such as the Artists in Residence program. Room and board arrangements are available for students working on fellowships and internships associated with SERC.

The SERC campus includes 32 Schoodic Shore apartments, four one-bedroom Suites and six Cabins with comfortable lodging for up to 80 overnight guests.

Schoodic Shores

Two and four bedroom apartments are located in a village-like setting with a playground and picnic pavilion. All units have full kitchens, living and dining rooms. The two bedroom apartments have one full bathroom, the four bedroom apartments have one full and two half bathrooms. Some apartments have laundry facilities.

The Suites

In the woods above the Schoodic Shore apartments are four one-bedroom suites with a kitchen/dining room, a living room, and a private bath.

The Cabins

Set in the spruce/fir woods in the center of campus, the Cape Cod style cabins have a kitchen/dining room, living room, bedroom, and full bath on the first floor. There are two more bedrooms are on the second floor.
