Mathematical Models Meet Marine Biology

Tuesday, April 24, 2007

Teaching high school science is a challenge. Part of the challenge is engaging the students so that they observe closely, seeing and measuring what is really there, rather than what they expect to be there. But, at the same time that you are getting the students to pay close attention to the details, you also have to help them think beyond the details to perceive the surrounding system. How do the details fit into a bigger picture? Success depends on achieving two objectives that lead in different direction, getting the students to observe precisely while thinking more generally—to look carefully at the trees while also perceiving the forest.

On July 15-19 (Sunday - Thursday) this summer Acadia Partners will offer a special course that will help teachers tie these two objectives together so that they support each other, rather than pulling in different directions. We will bring back Dr. Aimee Phillippi, the 2006 LL Bean Acadia Research Fellow from Unity College who spent the summer doing population studies of crabs and shellfish in the intertidal zones around Schoodic—this work with teachers in a study of population dynamics in the intertidal zone. She will team up with Dr. Mic Jackson, a professor of mathematics at Earlham college, who will work with Dr. Phillippi and the high school teachers to build mathematical models to tie together and describe their field observations.

Acadia Partners Launches New Education Website

Friday, February 16, 2007

Acadia Partners has launched a new website at www.acadialearning.org that we will use for collaborative work with students and teachers who cannot be here with us on the Schoodic campus.

The first major effort on the site is work to build on the research conducted by Maine School of Science and Mathematics students here at Schoodic this past January. The new site contains a complete set of the presentations that came out of that work, as well as a discussion forum that is in use as we work together on a potential presentation at the upcoming Maine Water Conference.

Winter Watershed Geochemistry

Friday, January 05, 2007

We are in the final stages of preparing for the winter watershed geochemistry field class that Sarah Nelson will be running here on the SERC campus for Maine School of Science and Mathematics students over the next two weeks.

The students will be able to record observations in a class web log, or "blog." If you are interested in following along as events unfold, you can find the blog here on our website.

As I write this, we have already posted a number of items, including a draft daily schedule.
